Chapter: Historiography and political theology: Momigliano and the end of history

The chapter, "Historiography and political theology: Momigliano and the end of history", by Howard Caygill (Goldsmiths, University of London) was published in the contributed volume, "The Western Time of Ancient History: Historiographical Encounters with the Greek and Roman Pasts", ed. Alexandra Lianeri (Cambridge University Press, March 2011: pp. 99-116).

Excerpt: "Momigliano ... consistently questions the implied equation between oracular politics, prophetic historiography and the ressentiment of 'pariah' groups, and most consistently in the case of Jewish and Christian oracular and prophetic historiography. He defends such historiography in the name of a political theology sensitive to the place of eschatological and messianic themes in the writing of history and the philosophy of history. His early and sustained interest in Weimar debates in political theology and messianism enabled him to develop an account of historical temporality able to do justice to both progressive and messianic philosophies of history and even to perceive cases of their mutual compatibility."
